We have seen clients who are drinking too much after recovering from cancer, strokes or who are using it as a coping mechanism to deal with long term conditions such as MS or Fibromyalgia. Addressing the psychological elements to these drinking patterns is hugely important if we are to create positive changes to our client’s habits and behaviours. An occasional drink is fine but many of our clients would spend hours in there every evening and we had to ask why? Perhaps they were lonely and this was the only way they could be in the company of others. Alternatively, a large proportion had problems with their partner but rather than confront them they would avoid having the conversation and spend their night drinking to forget their problem.

Anger management issues may be rooted in a specific mental health disorder in some cases. One study found that chronic alcohol use decreases the function in the prefrontal cortex, which plays a key role in impulse control. Researchers have also linked impulsive alcohol-related behavior to genetic involvement, with the presence of the serotonin 2B receptor gene (HTR2B) playing a role in impulsive and aggressive behaviors while under the influence of alcohol. Often, when children, spouses alcohol depression and anger and other loved ones spend time close to someone who becomes abusive when they drink, their lives change for the worse. For example, multiple studies have shown that children who are exposed to trauma at a young age — domestic abuse or violence linked to addiction, for example — are more likely to abuse substances or develop mental disorders when they grow up. Users of psychoactive substances had elevated anger scores compared to non-users, which represents a high risk of relapse.

3 Predicting Treatment Outcomes

Training of cognitive functions seems also to improve patients’ ability to take in and process information from empirically validated therapies more quickly and with more lasting effect. This makes it possible to recall and use the newly learned interaction and coping methods better. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the leading causes of the global burden of disease and injury (WHO), despite the continuous discovery of novel pharmacotherapeutic agents (Pakri Mohamed et al., 2018). Various factors such as environmental, social, situational, and cultural context have distinctive consequences toward substance use and its effects on individuals (Latkin et al., 2017). Violence related to substance use has been widely reported and studied, particularly the potential for violent outcomes between the different substances of use (Duke et al., 2018).

alcoholism and anger triggers

Anger management therapy is one of the best options available for helping you understand your emotions and find effective ways to cope with them. Lack of impulse control can make someone fly into a fit of rage or become aggressive rapidly.

The Dangers of Anger in Sobriety

Never underestimate the power of habit when it comes to your alcohol triggers. We are creatures of habit and many of us love to do the same things at the same time day after day as a way of feeling safe or comfortable. Whilst we are on the subject of partners how many of you drink before having sex and can’t imagine being in bed with someone sober? Perhaps you have confidence issues and when you have drink those tend to fade away so you are less conscious of your body and thoughts.

When most people think of how alcohol affects the body, the brain isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. We often think of the liver, stomach, and how alcohol damages our overall physical health. But the brain is deeply (and immediately)  impacted by heavy alcohol use as well. In fact, it’s the relationship alcohol shares with the brain that often causes people to experience things like rage and irritability while drinking. Although no objective indicators of other substance use were obtained (e.g., urine screens), participants were asked whether they had used illicit substances.
